Joss Whedon is reportedly no longer attached to Warner Bros.' Batgirl feature film.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Whedon cut ties with the project after realizing he didn't know what to do with the character.

Batgirl is such an exciting project, and Warners/DC such collaborative and supportive partners, that it took me months to realize I really didn’t have a story,” Whedon told THR. “I’m grateful to Geoff [Johns] and [Warners Picture Group president] Toby [Emmerich] and everyone who was so welcoming when I arrived, and so understanding when I… uh, is there a sexier word for ‘failed’?”

There is no word yet as to whether the studio has another director in mind to take over from the departing Whedon.

Rumors swirled in late 2017 that Whedon was contemplating an exit from the project. At the time, the studio was reeling from the lackluster box office performance of Justice League, a film Whedon had been brought onto in the eleventh hour in an attempt to "save." Despite extensive reshoots and an overhaul of the film's story, Whedon's efforts were unsuccessful, with critics and audiences alike roundly slamming the final product.

At last report, the yet-to-be-titled Batgirl movie will reportedly follow the New 52 version of Barbara Gordon; more specifically, it will draw inspiration from Gail Simone’s 2011 run on the character, which sees the character regain the use of her legs after a terrible accident.
