Joss Whedon has responded to harsh criticism of his Wonder Woman script, which leaked last year, a decade after he parted ways with Warner Bros. on the project.Asked by Variety about the online backlash during Monday's red-carpet premiere for Avengers: Infinity War, Whedon confessed that he isn't fully aware of the criticisms, but having re-read the script, he stands by what he wrote.

"I think it's great," he told Variety. "People say that it's not 'woke' enough, and I think they're not looking at the big picture. It's easy to take one phrase out of context." Although he admits to perhaps not being the most "woke" individual, he insisted "the movie has integrity and the characters have integrity."

The script surfaced online last year following the release of director Patty Jenkins' Wonder Woman, and drew criticism for its portrayal of Diana, particularly in the opening pages.

After directing both Avengers and its sequel Age of Ultron, Whedon shifted over to the DC Extended Universe. He tightened the script for 2017's Justice League and took the reins of the film following the departure of director Zack Snyder. Whedon was originally announced to write and direct a Batgirl movie, but abruptly departed the project in February.
