Official Press Release
As part of STAR TREK 40th-Anniversary celebration next year, ((FREQUENCIES))
author Joshua Ortega will be writing a brand new story set in the classic-era
of The Original Series–meaning he’ll get the rare opportunity to work on one
of the 20th-century’s most influential entertainment properties.
“It’s truly an honor to work with such legendary characters and concepts.
Captain Kirk, Spock, and Dr. McCoy? It doesn’t get much better than that. I grew
up on STAR TREK, and the stories, techonologies, and ideas presented in The
Original Series have had a profound influence on my work. It was such a
groundbreaking series–in every way.”
Ortega’s story will be written for TOKYOPOP, the Los Angeles-based publisher
that has helped to make manga a household word in America. “TOKYOPOP has done
an amazing job bringing Japanese comics and the manga aesthetic to mainstream
American audiences,” says Ortega. “You’ll find TOKYOPOP books in chain
bookstores, independent bookstores, even in music shops like Sam Goody, and they’ve
worked with everyone from the biggest names in manga to Courtney Love, Allen
Iverson, and Neil Gaiman. They’re a phenomenal success story.”
The story will be drawn in classic manga style, “so readers should expect to
see Kirk and the Enterprise crew in a fresh, bold, and dynamic way. This won’t
look like any previous STAR TREK story or comic done before. TREK fans are in
for a real treat.”
2006 is shaping up to be a big year not only for the STAR TREK franchise, but
for Joshua Ortega as well. In addition to the TREK project, he is also in the
final stages of a major STAR WARS project written for Dark Horse Comics and
LucasBooks. “Unfortunately, I can’t really elaborate on the STAR WARS project.
Everything’s top-secret at this stage, but there should be some announcements
made early next year. It’s going to be really big–that’s about all I can say.”
Ortega is also writing two monthly comic book series: THE NECROMANCER, a hit
horror-fantasy title that he co-created for Top Cow Productions, and BEOWULF,
which he’ll be writing for Speakeasy Comics beginning in December with Issue
#7. He’s also completed work on an original story featuring The Escapist from
Michael Chabon’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel THE AMAZING ADVENTURES OF
KAVALIER AND CLAY, as well as “The Gun,” a Batman story for the LEGENDS OF THE DARK
