Horror writer Eric Heisserer, who has worked on remakes like "A Nightmare on Elm Street" and "The Thing," will pen New Line's adaptation of "Sandman," according to The Hollywood Reporter. Joseph Gordon-Levitt is attached as director and star to the project, which New Line hopes will become a trilogy.

Late last year, producer David S. Goyer announced that the film's script, originally written by Jack Thorne, was being reworked by "a really fantastic writer." It is unclear at this time if Heisserer was the writer he was referring to.

Written by Neil Gaiman and illustrated by a variety of artists, "The Sandman" is one of the most celebrated comic book series of all time. It ran for 75 issues and was an instrumental part of the creation of DC's Vertigo imprint. Gaiman recently returned to the characters and concepts with the "Sandman: Overture" miniseries.

In addition to "A Nightmare on Elm Street" and "The Thing," Heisserer worked on "Final Destination 5" as well the upcoming "The Conjuring 2" and "Lights Out." He also penned the script for "The Story of Your Life," the sequel to "Sicario."
