After reportedly turning down offers for Guardians of the Galaxy and Godzilla, Joseph Gordon-Levitt has signed on to Sin City: A Dame to Kill For, the highly anticipated sequel from Robert Rodriguez and Frank Miller.

The 31-year-old actor, fresh off high-profile turns in The Dark Knight Rises, Looper and Lincoln, will play a new character named Johnny, described as "a cocky gambler who disguises a darker mission to destroy his most foul enemy at his best game." According to Deadline, Johnny is one of the core characters in the film's overlapping storylines.

Sin City: A Dame to Kill For weaves together the second volume of Miller's acclaimed Dark Horse crime series and the short story “Just Another Saturday Night" with new tales, including one called “The Long, Bad Night.” The screenplay was written by Oscar winner William Monahan (The Departed).

Gordon-Levitt joins returning cast members Mickey Rourke as Marv, Jessica Alba as Nancy, Rosario Dawson as Gail and Jaime King as Goldie/Wendy, along with new additions Dennis Haysbert as Manute and Jamie Chung as Miho. Filming is under way at Rodriguez's Troublemaker Studios in Austin, Texas.

Released in 2005, Sin City grossed nearly $159 million worldwide. Sin City: A Dame to Kill For opens Oct. 4, 2013.
