The People Under The Stairs follows a young boy and two thieves who become trapped in a house belonging to a suburban couple called the Robesons, who hide a dark secret under the basement in their house. The film was a commercial success and became renowned in later years for its biting satire, with the Robesons drawing comparisons to then-President Ronald Reagan and current President Donald Trump. Craven had previously sought to make a television adaptation of The People Under The Stairs before his death.

Peele previously wrote and directed Get Out and Us for Universal, with both films receiving critical acclaim. He is also a rather prolific producer, serving as a producer for HBO's Lovecraft Country and producing and starring in The Twilight Zone remake. Peele produced and co-wrote the upcoming remake of Candyman directed by Nia DaCosta, which will debut in theaters on Aug. 27, 2021.
