Mad Men star John Hamm confirmed he's open to joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe as legendary X-Men villain Mister Sinister.

Hamm, who almost played Mister Sinister in 2020's New Mutants, discussed the possibility of bringing the character to life in the MCU during a recent interview with ComicBook.com. "Something like the most recent Spider-Man [movie], which was such a cool iteration of that idea of the Multiverse and what's happening and how three things can exist at the same time, it's very creative," he said. "The way that they lean into that creativity is something that, for sure, I'd be happy to be a part of."

Mister Sinister was originally set to appear in 20th Century Fox's X-Men film franchise, with Hamm the frontrunner for the role. X-Men: Apocalypse teased the supervillain's arrival in a post-credit sting centered around the Essex Corporation, which servedas a reference to Sinister's civilian identity, Nathaniel Essex. This was to be followed by a brief cameo by the man himself in New Mutants, although Sinister was ultimately absent from the final cut. Producer Simon Kinberg later revealed that this cameo was intended to set up the villains' involvement in the now-canceled Gambit movie.

Rumors persisted that Hamm filmed unused footage for New Mutants, speculation the actor eventually debunked. "I never shot anything. I remember having a conversation with people: I'm a huge comic book fan, especially of the X-Men and The New Mutants, so I was excited to be considered. But these conversations happen and then life intervenes," Hamm said.

Hamm isn't the only actor associated with the X-franchise who is eager to enter the MCU fold. Rebecca Romijn recently confirmed she's open to reprising the role of Mystique should Marvel Studios invite her to do so. "It was a fantastic franchise to be a part of," Romijn said. "I'll love that cast until the day I die. We had a great time together. And yeah, I would absolutely be open to that."

Romijn's fellow franchise veteran Oscar Isaac might also be keen to take another shot at the X-Men property, after admitting he wishes X-Men: Apocalypse had turned out better. "I wish it would have been a better film and that they would have taken care of the character a little better, but those are the risks," Isaac said in a recent interview, while also insisting he nevertheless has fond memories of making the movie.
