Thanks to the upcoming crossover, Batman: The Joker War!, after more than thirty years, Batgirl will finally address her trauma from her life-altering confrontation with the Joker in The Killing Joke.

During the Batman: The Joker War! panel at DC FanDome, Batgirl writer Cecil Castellucci talked about Batgirl's appearance in the crossover, though she was unsure of what would happen. When she saw the cover of Batgirl #47--which features the Joker knocking on Barbara's door -- Castellucci stated, "I really thought, 'Maybe this is an opportunity to revisit that moment and have Batgirl in a different place having dealt with her trauma from him,'" she said. "And have this be a response to Killing Joke. It was a real opportunity to address the wrong done to Barbara in Killing Joke."

Castellucci spoke with comic editor Jessica Chen and artist Robbi Rodriguez, and they all agreed "to echo some of the images in Killing Joke but turn them on their head." Castellucci said that the process was complicated, but it was worth it to give Barbara a voice against the man who severely wounded and traumatized her.

She also mentioned that this issue was not the first time Batgirl and Joker have encountered one another since the events of The Killing Joke. However, those reunions never dealt with the "core wound" that Barbara had suffered because of him. "From my view, she's never named her trauma and confronted it full on and had the opportunity to confront her abuser," she commented.

The new ongoing Batgirl series written by Cecil Castellucci began in 2016. As of Aug. 2020, 48 issues have been published with #49 and #50 coming out in late September and early October, respectively.
