How Joker will do at the box office remains to be seen, but if it does well, a sequel could be possible. That being said, the film's director, Todd Phillips, said he would be interested in making a one, so long as Joaquin Phoenix is up for it.
During an interview with Total Film Magazine, Phillips had nothing but good things to say about the actor. "One thing I will tell you: I would do anything with Joaquin, any day of the week," he stated.
"There’s nobody like him," Phillips continued. "If he was willing to do it, and if people show up to this movie, and Warners came to us and said, 'You know what? If you guys could think of something…' Well, I have a feeling that he and I could think of something pretty cool."
Joker promises to be an origin story of sorts for Gotham's Clown Prince of Crime that stands apart from other comic book films, and it's already receiving some early Oscar buzz. The film will make its world premiere at the 76th Venice International Film Festival on August 31.
Directed by Todd Phillips, Joker stars Joaquin Phoenix, Robert De Niro, Zazie Beetz, Bill Camp, Frances Conroy, Brett Cullen, Glenn Fleshler, Douglas Hodge, Marc Maron, Josh Pais and Shea Whigham. The film arrives in theaters Oct. 4.
