Of all the films debuting at this year's Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), none is more eagerly anticipated by comic book fans than Todd Phillips' Joker.

While hinted to have its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival next month, the North American premiere for Joker is confirmed for TIFF. The Canadian festival is scheduled to run from September 5-15.

Phillips' film reimagines the iconic DC villain as a failed standup comedian who turns to a life of crime while caring for his ailing mother. Starring Joaquin Phoenix in the title role, the film is expected to be a departure from the comic book source material and unrelated to the DC Extended Universe.

Reports have indicated Joker's world premiere may be at the Venice Film Festival, running from August 28 to September 7, but regardless of where and when the film makes its debut, Phillips' take on the infamous villain is sure to get audiences talking.
