Director Todd Phillips hopes to get the last laugh as he teases the start of principal photography on Warner Bros.' Joker.
A gritty origin story for Batman's iconic arch-nemesis, the film stars three-time Academy Award nominee Joaquin Phoenix in the title role, with Martin Scorsese attached to produce.
Phillips shared a brooding photo of himself enveloped in smoke, accompanied by the catpion, "Here we go."
Recent photos of Phoenix confirmed he has been losing weight for his role as the Clown Prince of Crime. With the Walk the Line actor sporting longer hair and a more gaunt appearance in line with the comic book version of The Joker, it looks as if Phillips isn't the only one preparing for the project, which is expected to launch a new DC Films banner for features set outside the continuity of the so-called DC Extended Universe.
There has been a recent flurry of activity surrounding Joker, with character details about Robert De Niro's role and the quick casting/departure of Alec Baldwin and Thomas Wayne. With most of the movie's big names locked in, fans can expect plenty of news and behind-the-scenes shots as Joker gets under way.
Directed and co-written by Todd Phillips, Joker stars Joaquin Phoenix as the titular character, along with Robert De Niro, Marc Maron and Zazie Beetz. It is scheduled to be released on Oct. 4, 2019.
