A first look at the next Joaquin Phoenix in makeup as the Clown Prince of Crime has been revealed by Joker director Todd Phillips.
The filmmaker debuted a brief camera test of Phoenix wearing face paint to transform him into Batman's arch-nemesis. Previously released images of Joaquin's character, Arthur Fleck, showed him without makeup.

In the quick video, Fleck flashes one of those twisted smiles before it fades away and he's left with a stern stare.

Fans of The Dark Knight will notice the face paint design draws some resemblance to the opening sequence in Christopher Nolan's critically acclaimed film, which was actually a nod to a moment with Cesar Romero's Joker in the classic 1966 Batman television series.

Directed and co-written by Todd Phillips, Joker stars Joaquin Phoenix as the titular character along with Robert De Niro, Marc Maron, Zazie Beetz, Frances Conroy, Brett Cullen, and Bill Camp. It is scheduled to be released on October 4, 2019.
