The most important scene in Joker was apparently left on the cutting room floor.

The film's star, Joaquin Phoenix, explained why he believes this to be the case while speaking to a crowd at the Palm Springs Film Festival on Friday. During this event, he presented Joker director Todd Phillips with the Variety Creative Impact In Directing award.

“Sometimes I need somebody to really state the obvious to me,” Phoenix explained. “I’m slow. It takes me a long time to find something.”

Three weeks into shooting, the Oscar winner said he was rumbling all different kinds of ideas in his head for the iconic Joker character when it came time to film the “important” scene.

“(Phillips) always encouraged me to just to fail, which I did a lot,” Phoenix said, going on a tangent about filming the "important scene" in question. However, he never details what the scene exactly was, particularly because the contents of it didn't matter as much as the significance of filming it. Philips helped instruct Phoenix through the scene until he found his cinematic sweet spot.

Phoenix said, "It was a scene that ultimately was cut out of the movie, but it ended up being kind of the most important scene in the movie because it helped me find sincerity.”

“Sometimes we need that kind of encouragement or that kind of direction,” Phoenix said. “So thank you, Todd, for helping me to find sincerity.”

Joker is currently available to rent on digital and is set to be released on Blu-ray on Jan. 7.
