Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker won’t have any of the grills or tattoos that defined the look of Jared Leto’s take on the Clown Prince of Crime.

The Todd Phillips-directed Joker film will feature a new origin story for the character and a brand new look. This deviates hard from the most recent live-action version of The Joker, who appeared in Suicide Squad. Defined by his numerous tattoos and large metal grills, this Joker proved controversial with fans.

According to Joker cast member Zazie Beetz, this new version of The Joker won’t have any of the gang-banger inspired look that Jared Leto featured in the character’s last live-action appearance, Suicide Squad. Beetz was asked about the look of the Joker at the ACE Comic Con and confirmed that this new version of the Joker won’t have tattoos over his body. “No,” she explained, “And I haven’t seen any grillz up to this point.”

Directed and co-written by Todd Phillips, Joker stars Joaquin Phoenix as the titular character along with Robert De Niro, Marc Maron, Zazie Beetz, Frances Conroy, Brett Cullen and Bill Camp. It is scheduled to be released on Oct. 4, 2019.
