According to Variety, the Todd Phillips-directed film brought in $140.5 million across 73 international markets. Combined with its domestic gross of $93.5 million, Joker earned $234 million, vastly outperforming national and international expectations.
The top international performer was South Korea, which brought in $16.3 million after opening this past Wednesday. It is also the largest opening for Warner Bros. in that country. It was followed by the UK, with $14.8 million, Mexico with $13.1 million and Russia with $10 million.
Joker was also the biggest 2019 opening for a Warner Bros. film in 39 markets, including the UK, Russia, Italy, Spain, Poland, UAE, Japan, Korea, Indonesia, Brazil, Mexico and Australia. Warner Bros. should expect more good news in the coming weeks, with the film set to open in France on Oct. 9 and Germany on Oct. 10. China, however, has yet to approve the film for release.
Directed by Todd Phillips, Joker stars Joaquin Phoenix, Robert De Niro, Zazie Beetz, Bill Camp, Frances Conroy, Brett Cullen, Glenn Fleshler, Douglas Hodge, Marc Maron, Josh Pais and Shea Whigham. The film is now in theaters.
