Director Todd Phillips' 2019 DC Comics-based character study Joker enjoyed a relatively successful night at the 77th Golden Globe Awards, winning two of the four honors it was nominated for -- including Best Actor.

Joaquin Phoenix was awarded Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture - Drama for his acclaimed portrayal of Joker’s lead character, Arthur Fleck. Meanwhile, composer Hildur Guðnadóttir took home the honor of Best Original Score - Motion Picture for her similarly-lauded work on the film’s music.

Phoenix came out on top against Antonio Banderas (Pain and Glory), Adam Driver (Marriage Story), Jonathan Pryce (The Two Popes) and, coincidentally, former Batman actor Christian Bale (Ford v Ferrari). Guðnadóttir prevailed against Alexandre Desplat (Little Women), Randy Newman (Marriage Story), Thomas Newman (1917) and Daniel Pemberton (Motherless Brooklyn) to take home her Golden Globe.

Joker enjoyed a successful run at the box office, even becoming the first R-rated film to cross the coveted $1 billion mark worldwide. Upon its initial premiere at the Venice Film Festival, the film also took home the organization's highest honor. Now, the Clown Prince of Crime's first solo film adds two Golden Globe awards to its growing list of accolades. The other two Golden Globes Joker was nominated for were Best Director - Motion Picture (won by Sam Mendes for 1917) and Best Motion Picture - Drama (also won by 1917)
