While Joker continues to exceed industry expectations at the domestic box office, it has performed even stronger at the combined global box office, putting the gritty DC film on track to earn $1 billion worldwide.
After its second weekend, the film has crossed the $500 million mark globally, with $351.2 million of its earnings from foreign markets. Box Office Guru founder Gitesh Pandya, a film industry analyst tracking box office performance of films worldwide, observed the movie had a decent chance at reaching $1 billion if it could keep the momentum going both domestically and overseas.
#Joker is on fire in intl mkts with a sensational $123.7M this wknd dropping only 29%. Stellar new totals are $351.2M overseas and $543.9M at worldwide #boxoffice. This one might just reach the Billion Dollar mark, people!— Gitesh Pandya (@GiteshPandya) October 13, 2019
Joker broke the box office record for highest-earning second weekend in October of all-time, retaining the top spot against openers Gemini Man and The Addams Family, while losing only 29% of its domestic box office by earning $55 million.
Comparatively, Joker is approximately $114 million away from reaching Justice League's lifetime box office earnings worldwide in 2017. It is currently showing no signs of slowing down. With a reported production budget of $55 million, the film has become a surprise hit for Warner Bros. as it moves towards the end of the year.
Directed by Todd Phillips, Joker stars Joaquin Phoenix, Robert De Niro, Zazie Beetz, Bill Camp, Frances Conroy, Brett Cullen, Glenn Fleshler, Douglas Hodge, Marc Maron, Josh Pais and Shea Whigham. The film is in theaters now.
