The JoJo's Bizarre Adventure universe comes complete with a number of Stands that reflect their users' personalities. Some are tailored for combat (whether as offense or defensive utilities), whereas others have purposes which often serve the vocation of their users. This compels dozens of unpredictable encounters, with almost no two Stands being similar to one another.

However, some Stands are so horrendous that they are oftentimes a detriment to their own user. By analyzing what about them makes them undesirable, we can discern the worst (though not necessarily weakest) forces of the series.

10 Tohth Has Obtuse Rules & Can Kill Its User If Not Executed Perfectly

tohth jojo

The Stand of Boingo, Tohth was able to predict the future based off of the events which occurred in a comic book. It would produce a favorable outcome for the viewer, hypothetically rendering it an extremely powerful and desirable utility.

However, it is limited by the skill of its user, and should they deviate from its plan in any way, the tome would engineer their ironic destruction. This was evident in two occasions, with Oingo suffering a point blank explosion in the first and Hol Horse falling victim to his own gun in the second. Since the book does not state the likelihood of one's success within their pages, it is not reliable.

9 Purple Haze's Range Can't Be Controlled & Is Deadly To Nearby Allies

Anime JoJo Purple Haze Seething

The Stand of Fugo, Purple Haze was a formidable weapon. Wherever it went, it was able to secrete a noxious fog which mottled the skin of its opponents, inducing an agonizing defeat upon them in a manner of seconds. This was a skill employed against Illuso.

However, Purple Haze's range is limited, and it cannot control its gas. Consequently, activating this Stand places one's friends in mortal peril. In that regard, Fugo's subsequent departure from Bucciarati's team was perhaps the least costly.

8 Anubis Takes Over Its User For Its Own Evil Ends

Anubis controlled the minds of his users - JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Stardust Crusaders

The Anubis Stand was a sword capable of adapting to its opponent's movements. With every encounter (whether victory or defeat), it became faster and more agile until it was even able to exceed Star Platinum's impressive precision.

Nonetheless, there is a stipulation behind such legendary power. A Stand without a user, anyone who wields the blade will fall prey to the insidious spirit possessing it. They will become a vessel for its will, likely one that will be replaced within a matter of hours as it latches onto its next host.

7 The Lock Only Works Against People Who Pity Its Owner

The lock

The Stand of Tamami, the Lock was able to affix itself to its targets' chests, weighing them down and forcing them to abide by its user's will. As viable as this might seem, it was only activated after the subject felt pity or empathy for the Stand's owner.

While Tamami may unabashedly exploit the gullibility of others even at the expense of his own dignity, it is not a price many are willing to pay. Moreover, the Lock is completely useless in battle; should the friends of a victim discover one's intentions in using it, it would be worthless for self defense (as Kobayashi would discover against Koichi).

6 Rolling Stones Can't Be Directly Controlled & Kills Random People

Rolling stones golden wind

Rolling Stones was the Stand of Scolippi. Whoever's likeness it assumed would guarantee their death, and touching the rock would be the only way to conceivably avoid their fate. This was not save them, however— instead, it would kill them instantly.

More egregiously, the user themselves cannot control their Stand, nor prevent what likeness it assumes. Therefore, they may be accidentally responsible for dozens of casualties and public disturbances, drawing the ire of those the user cannot defend himself from.

5 Holy Kujo's Stand Is Thorny Ivy That Slowly Consumes Its User's Body

Jojos Holy Kujo Stand

The unnamed Stand of Holy Kujo was a series of thorny vines much like Joseph Joestar's Hermit Purple. However, she was unable to control it, and consequently, it began to dominate her entire body. Were it not for Jotaro's heroic intervention, she would have died from its pernicious influence.

While some may suspect that Holy's low willpower is to blame for the Stand's perilous effects, it was not a phenomenon observed in literally any other Stand user (including dogs, apes, and even children). Therefore, it's reasonable to conclude there may be something destructive within the Stand itself.

4 Empress Is Slow To Grow & If Destroyed, Also Destroys Its User

The Empress punches Joseph in the face - JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Stardust Crusaders

The Empress was the Stand of Nena, a wart which slowly grew on its opponent's body until they became powerful enough to break steel. It is deceptively self-destructive for a number of reasons.

Not only must one spurt blood onto their opponent's bare skin in order for it to take effect, the Stand must also be given time to grow undisturbed. Whatever damage it sustains is reflected back on its user; therefore, should one successfully be able to take care of it before it evolves out of control, its owner's body would be obliterated entirely.

3 Super Fly Can Also Imprison Its Own User

Super Fly jojo

Super Fly was a gigantic tower that could entrap anything that came inside it. Attempting to leave would convert the subject into a metal statue, and the user could control its bolts and wires like an extension of his body.

However, Toyohiro was a victim of his own Stand, forced to wait until a replacement had arrived before he himself could depart from it permanently. He realized that it was a curse, especially since he would spend the rest of his days confined within its framework.

2 Ebony Devil Is A Weak Puppet That Transfers The Damage It Receives Back To Its User

Ebony devil JoJo's Bizarre Adventure

Ebony Devil was a tiny doll which shared its user's murderous intentions. After entrapping Polnareff under the bed, the Stand viciously attacked him with the understanding that he couldn't retaliate.

However, the damage the puppet sustains is reflected on its user, and given that its strength and durability is proportional to its tiny body, the assassin would have had better luck abandoning his Stand altogether and attempting to slay him personally. Since he didn't, he would suffer a gruesome death at the hand of Silver Chariot, unable to defend himself the second the fight had become remotely fair.

1 Cheap Trick Takes Over Its User & Is Virtually Impossible To Escape From Alive

Cheap Trick on Rohan's back - JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Diamond is Unbreakable

Like Anubis, Cheap Trick was a rogue Stand which evolved its own sentience. After one glimpsed its user's back, their current owner would explode instantly, with the Stand then latching onto the person who had seen them and repeating the process.

Moreover, it cannot be removed or otherwise destroyed through one's own strength. Since it converts itself into its victim's Stand, whatever damage is takes is then reflected to its host. Therefore, by destroying it, one rapidly destroys themselves in the process. Were it not for Reimi Sugimoto's alley, Cheap Trick would have successfully slain Rohan Kishibe.
