A good rule of thumb when watching or reading JoJo's Bizarre Adventure is to not get too attached to a character. When a younger Zeppeli agrees to learn Hamon, he also accepts his imminent death. Although Zeppeli doesn't know when he will die, he is given certain clues that will alert him when the moment finally arrives.

What makes Zeppeli's death so sad is that he knows he is going to die, but no one else sees it coming. Before he dies, Zeppeli passes his life energy to Jonathan, which aids him in defeating Tarukus. With Zeppeli's death, Jonathan not only loses a mentor, but also a friend.

9 Jonathan Joestar Dies On His Honeymoon

One of the most unexpected things to happen in JoJo's is the untimely death of the hero Jonathan Joestar. While Jonathan's death certainly helps to move the story along and create plot points for later in the series, it is no less sad when he dies.

Jonathan is finally happy, thinking he's put the whole Dio mess behind him as he celebrates his honeymoon with Erina. However, Jonathan does not get his happily ever after. He sacrifices himself to protect the world from Dio and encourages Erina to live on without him.

8 Avdol Is Erased From Existence

While looking for Dio inside his mansion in Egypt, Avdol, Iggy and Polnareff run into the Stand user Cool Ice. Cool Ice's Stand, Cream, is one of the most dangerous Stands in the series. It has the ability to create a void and anything that passes through it is completely disintegrated.

Avdol notices the void and pushes Iggy and Polnareff out of the way and is consequently erased from existence. The only thing left behind are his arms. His death is so sudden and unexpected that it jars Polnareff to his core.

7 Josuke's Grandfather Can't Be Revived

Josuke's grandfather, Ryohei Higashikata, works as a police officer in Moriah. Through no fault of his own, Ryohei is tricked into ingesting the Stand Aqua Necklace. When Josuke finds him, he is bleeding from his eyes and mouth.

Josuke's Stand has the ability to heal, so he uses Shining Diamond to heal his grandfather. Sadly, Josuke's grandfather is already dead, and although his physical wounds are healed, Josuke is unable to revive his grandfather.

6 Kakyoin Noriaki Is Killed Before He Even Realizes It

Kakyoin's death is one of the cruelest hero deaths of the series. As he faces off against Dio, he learns just how powerful Dio's Stand, The World, is. The World stops time and punches a hole through Kakyoin without him even realizing it.

When time resumes, Kakyoin is already defeated and dying. With the last of his energy, he sends one final message to Joseph, clueing the others in on the secret of The World. His death aids the others in defeating Dio for good.

5 Narancia Ghirga Never Got To Go Home

In Episode 35 of Golden WindBucciarati and his crew find themselves in different bodies. While the gang tries to figure out whose body Diavolo is inhabiting, they experience a time skip and Narancia, who is in Giorno's body, disappears.

When they find him, he has been impaled on a fence. His death is instantaneous and his soul is gone, making it impossible for Giorno to revive him. It's a shocking blow to the gang and a very sad moment. Before the gang continues on, Giorno vows to return Narancia home.

4 Leone Abbacchio Dies Unexpectedly

In a similar manner to how Kakyoin died, Abbacchio is also defeated before he can even process what has happened. In their quest to discover Diavolo's true identity, Abbacchio experiences Diavolo's Stand, Emperor Crimson.

Emperor Crimson possesses the ability to erase time and predict the future. Diavolo uses Emperor Crimson to erase time and punch a hole through Abbacchio's heart, killing him instantly. Fans are left reeling as Abbacchio's Stand, Moody Jazz, slowly crumbles away.

3 Bruno Bucciarati Passes On The Torch

Bucciarati is attacked and fatally wounded by Diavolo's Stand, Emperor Crimson. Giorno heals his wounds, but something is amiss with Bucciarati's body. Throughout the remainder of their journey, it is evident Bucciarati is decaying.

When Bucciarati defeats Chariot Requiem, instead of returning to his body, Giorno sees Bucciarati'ss soul ascend. Bucciarati tells Giorno that he is leaving the rest in his hands. Giorno is the only one to witness this moment, leaving the others to believe that there is still hope in saving Bucciarati.

2 Iggy Sacrifices Himself to Save Polnareff

Until Iggy arrived at Dio's mansion and encountered Animal Shop, he did not care about Dio or any of the other circumstances surrounding the group's mission. Iggy, after all, was dragged into the quest against his will.

In the fight against Cool Ice, Iggy is badly beaten to the brink of death. However, as he lies dying, he uses the last of his strength to help save Polnareff, the one member he had been at odds with the most throughout their journey. Seeing Iggy's soul ascend into heaven was definitely a crushing moment.

1 Caesar Zeppeli Is Crushed By A Cross

Caesar is defeated by Wamuu and dies

Caesar faces off against Wamuu in Battle Tendency and nearly defeats him if not for one mistake. He receives the full force of Wamuu's Divine Sandstorm and knows he is going to die. He uses the last of his Hamon to make a blood bubble to send his headband and the ring with the antidote to Joseph.

What's sad about Caesar's death is how Joseph and Lisa Lisa react to it. Joseph states he held back from calling out to Caesar because he was afraid he would not get an answer, and Lisa Lisa is so shaken up, she puts her cigarette in her mouth backward.
