One of the biggest current storylines of NXT in 2020 has been a revival of arguably the greatest feud in NXT history — Johnny Gargano vs. Tommaso Ciampa. Stemming from Gargano turning on Ciampa during his match against Adam Cole at NXT TakeOver: Portlandthe empty arenas of Full Sail and the WWE Performance Center was riddled with animosity between the two former NXT Tag Team Champions. So much so, in fact, that Triple H had to book a brawl between them, and make an executive decision for the three-year storyline to end.

"I'm a firm believer in everything happening for a reason," said Gargano in exclusive comments to CBR. "Our story is unlike any other. I honestly don't think there will ever be another like it. Through various issues, injuries and insane circumstances, we've been put in a position time and time again to try make the best of horrible situations. That's our story though. It's almost appropriate that it ended this way."

In addition to the expected final match between Gargano and Ciampa, there was also another twist. NXT women's star and real-life wife of Gargano, Candice LeRae, also began to walk on the dark side after kicking Ciampa in the nether regions during the match of the former DIY members, costing him the match. After spending her NXT career as a babyface, the audience for the first time have the opportunity to see LeRae showcase how menacing she can be as a heel.

As fans saw with her match against Kacy Catanzaro, LeRae is heavily emphasizing her newly-donned "poison" gimmick, while Gargano is villainously cheering on the sidelines to further add fuel to LeRae's toxicity. The combination of Gargano and LeRae has great potential, if they can overcome the rocky start of explaining why they made the nefarious decision to abandon their fanfare.

Following the turn on Ciampa, Gargano explained in an vignette of how NXT is living in a fairy tale. "The NXT that I love has become a toxic wasteland, where the good people are taken advantage of, and the horrible people thrive and are rewarded for it," said Gargano. "The real fairy tale was believing that being a good person and being nice to everyone led to success... it's a cookie-cutter world, where they take advantage of someone's kindness."

LeRae added to the tirade by stating that not getting appreciation is "just the NXT way," and that she has been unappreciated since she starting her tenure with the black and yellow brand. LeRae stated that she is tired of playing the "big sister" and putting herself second before everyone else, hoping for things to change. However, they did not change, and now she wants to eat first.

Johnny Gargano and Candice LeRae have the potential to become a major point of NXT programming on a weekly basis. Gargano has already built one of the best resumes in NXT history, becoming the first-ever triple crown champion (NXT Champion, NXT North American Champion, NXT Tag Team Champion). The "we do not get any respect" type of turns are usually hit-and-miss, with a short shelf life. Gargano has tried this before with his recent heel turn in 2018, which was unsuccessful due to his overwhelming popularity. He did cause a bit of intrigue at the end of the vignette, though, by stating that the couple's new goal is becoming the first-ever married couple to simultaneously hold the NXT Championship and NXT Women's Championship. Seemingly, this goal is not far-fetched, and it does bring an extra layer to Gargano, who has been a part of the NXT brand since 2015.

LeRae's run as a babyface did reach a ceiling, and with Bianca Belair moving to the Raw brand, NXT needed another strong heel. In addition to Belair moving to Raw as a babyface to join her Street Profits husband Montez Ford and his partner Angelo Dawkins, top women's star Io Shirai's run as a heel is not working in NXT. This is due to the fans constantly cheering for her, despite her character becoming much darker. As a result, LeRae's heel turn has created an easier path for her to win the championship, and not have to wait in line while other babyfaces such as Rhea Ripley, Tegan Nox and Mia Yim clamber for purchase in front of her.
