While Johnny Depp's high-profile legal battle against his ex-wife Amber Heard may have come to a close, Hollywood producers don't think the actor's managed to save his career just yet.

Speaking to News24, an anonymous producer who has previously collaborated with Depp stated that the Pirates of the Caribbean star isn't guaranteed to return to the spotlight despite the favorable outcome of his $50 million defamation trial. "The damage that's done is done, and from this, it might start a process back to some sort of normalcy but I don't think he's going to get big, big, big studio jobs where there's so much on the line," the producer said.

The filmmaker goes on to say that while Depp proved victorious in the eyes of the jury, the statements he previously made to Heard, which were unearthed during the lawsuit, have tainted his career. "It's too risky to put a guy like that into billion-dollar franchises now," they continued. "The things he said are vile." They conclude by stating that studios won't tolerate Depp "throwing bottles and taking drugs" when he lacks the necessary star power to sell a franchise.

In early 2020, Depp filed a lawsuit against Heard, alleging that she had irreparably damaged his career after she published an op-ed piece that implied that he was a "wife-beater." Depp pushed back against these claims, saying that Heard abused him while they were married. The Aquaman star countered that she only ever hit Depp in self-defense, alleging that he both physically and sexually assaulted her.

After Heard published her op-ed, several big studios distanced themselves from Depp, although it was never proven that the allegations affected his career. He was originally meant to play Grindelwald in Warner Bros.' Fantastic Beasts franchise but was ultimately replaced by Mads Mikkelsen for the latest installment, The Secrets of Dumbledore. Similarly, Disney fired Depp from his long-time role as Jack Sparrow in Pirates of the Caribbean 6.

After a weeks-long trial that was publically broadcast, the jury handed down their decision on the matter, voting in Depp's favor and ruling that he was entitled to $15 million in damages. "From the very beginning, the goal of bringing this case was to reveal the truth, regardless of the outcome," wrote Depp after the verdict was announced. "Speaking the truth was something that I owed to my children and to all those who have remained steadfast in their support of me. I feel at peace knowing I have finally accomplished that."
