Johnny Depp testifies that he helped Amber Heard land her role as Mera in Aquaman.
As reported by The Direct, during his ongoing $50 million USD defamation trial against ex-wife Heard, Depp explained how he assisted her during the audition process leading up to Aquaman. The Pirates of the Caribbean star explains that following Heard's first few meetings with the film's creative team, she expressed concerns about the filming taking place in Australia. "So [Heard] asked if I would, because... for a few years I had had a multi-year deal with Warner Bros. so we’d been in business together so I knew these people," Depp said. "I’d been on films with them… She asked me if I would speak to them. I made a phone call and I spoke to… the three upper echelon… Warner executives, Kevin Sujihara, Sue Kroll, and Greg [Silverman]."
Depp goes on to say that while he's unsure about how much his conversations with Warner Bros. affected Heard's chances at being cast in Aquaman, it may have affected the studio's stance on casting her. "I can only say that ultimately she did get the job in the film, so hopefully I suppose I had curbed their worries to some degree," explained Depp.
Heard has disputed Depp's involvement in her Aquaman gig, stating that she landed the role on her own merits. "No, Ms. Vasquez, I got that role by auditioning," said Heard, when asked whether Depp got her the part.
This isn't the first time Depp has stated that he played a part in Heard's Aquaman casting. Following accusations that he was trying to control and dictate his ex-wife's career, Depp explained that he had no problem with Heard auditioning for films. "It's not about her doing films. How do you think she got Aquaman, sir?" said Depp to one of Heard's lawyers.
The ongoing legal battle between Depp and Heard wages, as the Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas star accused his ex-wife of irreparably damaging his career after she published an op-ed piece calling him a "wife-beater." Heard has gone on record to state Depp both physically and sexually assaulted her while they were married, alleging that she only hit him as an act of self-defense.
