Johnny Depp is looking to recapture some of that Hollywood magic after a string of commercial and critical disappointments that includes The Lone Ranger, Dark Shadows and Transcendence. To help achieve this, he might just play Harry Houdini.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Depp is close to signing a deal to star as the world-famous magician and skeptic for Lionsgate and Summit. The film is an adaptation of William Kalush and Larry Sloman's book The Secret Life of Houdini: The Making of America's First Superhero penned by Noah Oppenheim (The Maze Runner). Dean Parisot (RED 2) is on board to direct the film, which depicts Houdini investigating supernatural occurrences in adventures compared to those of Indiana Jones.
However, Deadline contends the project is no further along than it was when the website reported about it in January. Still, it seems like something must have shifted or changed for THR to be bringing up the film.
This Houdini story is not to be confused with the one written by Max Landis for Sony, even though they both cast the real-life figure as a world-hopping adventurer.
