Tubi has released the first trailer for Hot Take: The Depp/Heard Trial, an upcoming biographical film that will dramatize the controversial defamation trial between Johnny Depp and Amber Heard that shook the world in 2022.

Parallels star Mark Hapka and Alone in the Dark actor Megan Davis portray Depp and Heard respectively in the Hot Take trailer, which looks to take viewers beyond the courtroom showing the events leading up to the six-week defamation trial. Tubi's chief content officer Adam Lewinson has promised fans that Hot Take will "capture a timely take on a story that became part of the cultural zeitgeist, painting a unique picture of what millions watched play out in the headlines over the summer."

Hot Take: The Depp/Heard Trial was announced in Sept. 2022 and is the first film to be based on Depp's $50 million defamation suit against his ex-wife. The suit focused on an op-ed Heard published in The Washington Post, which Depp claims did damage to his career by portraying him as an abuser. Depp was awarded $10 million in compensatory damages and $5 million in punitive damages, the latter of which was limited to $350,000 by Virginia state law. Heard was also awarded $2 million in compensatory damages.

The Tubi Original Movie comes from FOX Entertainment's indie studio MarVista Entertainment and was directed by Sara Lohman from a script written by The Daily Show's Guy Nicolucci. Station 19's Melissa Marty and Law & Order True Crime's Mary Carrig are also part of the film's cast, portraying Depp’s lawyer Camille Vasquez and Heard’s lawyer Elaine Bredehoft, respectively.

Johnny Depp Returns to Acting With New Film

Following the conclusion of the defamation trial in June, Depp has been busy filming Jeanne du Barry in France. The actor will star as King Louis XV in the upcoming historical love story, which will focus on King Louis XV's relationship with his last royal mistress, Madame du Barry, to be played by the film's director Maïwenn. Production is expected to last until October and will open in French cinemas in 2023. Jeanne du Barry will then stream on Netflix following a 15-month theatrical run.

Heard will next be seen in 2023's Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, a follow-up to the 2018 DC blockbuster Aquaman. Despite a fan campaign to have Heard removed from the DC Extended Universe sequel, a spokesperson for the star confirmed that she is still in the film. Heard will once again portray Mera, the warrior princess and love interest of Jason Momoa's Arthur Curry/Aquaman, in The Lost Kingdom, which opens in theaters on Dec. 25, 2023.

Hot Take: The Depp/Heard Trial becomes available to stream for free on Tubi on Sept. 30.
