A reveal for Mortal Kombat 12 might just be around the corner, if Johnny Cage voice actor Andrew Bowen's deleted Twitter post is anything to go by.
In a now-deleted post to Twitter, Bowen shared a video of himself arriving at Warning Bros' studios, flashing a quick look at the WB water tower. Music that appears to be from Mortal Kombat 2 with a few voice lines from the series can be heard in the background. Although it is not confirmation of a new game, Bowen's appearance at Warner Bros' studios and the accompanying video suggests his involvement with some project with the company, lending credence to the idea he is reprising his role as the hero Johnny Cage. Whether Bowen's tweet was deleted due to the frenzy it caused or because it potentially leaked the existence of Mortal Kombat 12 remains unclear.
Early this year, an employee at developer NetherRealm possibly leaked Mortal Kombat 12 with a few tiny glimpses at computer monitors, with one file titled, "M" 12_Mast..." Several fans theorized this could be the title NetherRealm Senior Production Manager Jonathan Andersen teased in December 2021. However, many quickly pointed out that the tease was for a new game reveal that month, which never came. Others guessed that Mortal Kombat 12 might be the start of a new trilogy, based on a leak by an alleged former employee who claimed the next game would be one of the biggest in years.
Earlier in the year, Mortal Kombat co-owner Ed Boon offered a cryptic tease about the next game in the franchise. "I can say that for 10 years, we were releasing Mortal Kombat and Injustice, Mortal Kombat and Injustice," said Boon. "When we broke that pattern, there was a lot of speculation of what we would be doing next. I can tell you there was a reason for it, and when we announce our next game, it'll make a lot more sense. At this point, I'll get in a lot of trouble if I say anything more."
After launching in 2019, Mortal Kombat 11 stopped receiving continued support from NetherRealm in 2021 despite rave reviews for the game. The title received praise for its diversity and fun campaign, which explored the series' expansive universe. It received particular recognition for its guest appearances, such as the Joker, Rambo and the Terminator.
Mortal Kombat 11 is now available on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch and PC.
