James Mangold Corrects John Williams' Reshoot Claim

Director James Mangold took to Twitter in response to Williams' reshoot comment. "We’re not shooting & never shot any new scenes or 'alt endings,'" he said. "Our film is 99% finished, getting rated by MPAA & VFX being completed."

Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny may have multiple endings planned.

Legendary composer John Williams recently teased his score for Indiana Jones 5 at a concert in Italy. Alongside the sneak peek, Williams revealed the production's plan to shoot another ending for the sequel film. "So we have just about completed the film. We have maybe another ending to shoot and to record, maybe in a couple weeks," the 90-year-old composer said. While Williams discussed another potential ending, it's unclear what direction Dial of Destiny is taking for the conclusion.

At the Comic-Con Experience (CCXP) in Brazil, Disney unveiled the fifth Indiana Jones installment's official title, along with a trailer and poster of Harrison Ford posing as the iconic archaeology professor. In addition to Ford, the cast includes John Rhys-Davies reprising his role as Sallah, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Mads Mikkelsen, Boyd Holbrook, Toby Jones, and Antonio Banderas. As for the production crew, Ford v Ferrari's James Mangold has taken over for Steven Spielberg as the film's director.

In Dial of Destiny, fans will see Ford for the final time as Indiana Jones before he retires from the franchise. Ford began playing the Indy in 1981's Raiders of the Lost Ark and returned for the following three films. Mangold previously confirmed the action-adventure film would feature a de-aged Ford in a scene from 1944. Dial of Destiny later transitions to 1960s Manhattan.

"I wanted the chance to dive into this kind of full-on George [Lucas]-and-Steven [Spielberg] old picture and give the audience an adrenaline blast," Mangold said. "So that the audience doesn’t experience the change between the ‘40s and ‘60s as an intellectual conceit, but literally experiences the buccaneering spirit of those early days… and then the beginning of now."

Indiana Jones' Journey to Dial of Destiny

Despite the lack of information surrounding Dial of Destiny's plot, the film will primarily take place around the same time as the 1969 Moon Landing. Mikkelsen's character, Jürgen Voller, is an ex-Nazi involved with the moon-landing program at NASA. The real-life Nazi-turned-engineer Wernher von Braun inspires Voller. As seen in the trailer, Indy again faces the Third Reich with his fists in Dial of Destiny.

While the fifth Indiana Jones film releases in the summer of 2023, the development of Dial of Destiny began 14 years ago. Plans to create the movie started shortly after the release of 2008's Kingdom and the Crystal Skull, but numerous delays prevented production from taking off. In June 2021, Dial of Destiny finally came to fruition after filming began.

Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny arrives in theaters on June 30, 2023.
