The following contains spoilers for John Wick: Chapter 4, in cinemas now.

Lionsgate is eager for John Wick: Chapter 4 star Keanu Reeves to reprise the action-thriller sequel's titular role again, according to studio boss Joe Drake.

Drake, who serves as the Lionsgate Motion Picture Group Chair, addressed Reeves' future in an interview with Deadline. "We're not ready to say goodbye to Keanu with this franchise," he said. "It's what alternative there will be... there's a lot of different things that we can do [to incorporate Reeves into additional John Wick installments]." Reeves is already locked in to portray Wick in upcoming spinoff film Ballerina, which is set between John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum and John Wick: Chapter 4.

Whether the Canadian actor will appear in any John Wick projects set after Chapter 4 is currently unclear, though. This is due in no small part to John Wick's apparent death at the end of the franchise's fourth entry, which seemingly precludes his return outside of prequels and flashback sequences. That said, director Chad Stahelski emphasized the ambiguity of Wick's fate in a recent interview. "Whether you think John -- or John Wick -- is dead, that's your interpretation," Stahelski said. "These movies are supposed to be mythological fables, and there are consequences. When you do bad things, bad things happen."

Is John Wick: Chapter 5 Still Happening?

Stahelski also recently hinted that John Wick: Chapter 5 may yet happen, despite Chapter 4 apparently bringing John Wick's story to a close. The director explained that, while he and Reeves are "done" with John Wick for now, they'll discuss the possibility of another entry in the franchise's canon after taking a three-month break. "We'll have a couple [of] 20-year-old whiskies and write some ideas on napkins. If those ideas stick, maybe we'll make a movie," Stahelski said. He also noted that Lionsgate presumably has plans of its own for John Wick's future, foreshadowing Drake's comments to Deadline.

Lionsgate's enthusiasm for the John Wick franchise isn't likely to fizzle out any time soon, either. John Wick: Chapter 4 has done big business for the studio, raking in $73.5 million domestically and $138 million internationally over its opening weekend. This puts the sequel within range of beating John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum's $327.3 million global box office haul, currently the highest in the franchise's history. John Wick: Chapter 4 performed equally well critically, too, although some reviewers bemoaned its lengthy runtime.
