Keanu Reeves returns as the legendary but reluctant hitman in John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum. The latest installment of the neo-noir action-thriller franchise has plenty of style, and bloodshed, but does it have a post-credits scene?
Following the events of 2017's John Wick: Chapter 2, Reeves' character is on the run, forced to fight his way out of New York City when he's declared excommunicado for breaking the cardinal rule of the Continental Hotel, and a $14 million contract it take out on him.
CBR's review declares Chapter 3 as the best film in the series, with an ending that leaves open the door to a sequel. Between that and a planned television spinoff focusing on the Continental Hotel, which serves as neutral territory for members of the criminal underworld, a post-credits scene would be logical. Other franchises have certainly had less reason to include a stinger, but did so anyway.
However, like the two films before it, John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum does not feature a post-credits sequence. It tells the story in needs to without any bonus scenes, while keeping one eye toward franchise expansion.
That means once the final bullet is fired and last assassin falls, you're safe to shuffle in the darkness of the theater, and make the mad dash to the restroom, the parking lot or the row of waiting taxis.
Although Avengers: Endgame will undoubtedly retain its box-office crown overseas this weekend, John Wick: Chapter 3 may actually have a shot of taking down the Marvel Studios blockbuster in North America. Variety reports the thriller is on track to earn $30 million to $35 million domestically in its debut weekend. However, some industry observers speculate that early buzz -- John Wick: Chapter 3 stands at 95 percent on Rotten Tomatoes -- could boost director Chad Stahelski's sequel to $40 million in North America.
But even if Chapter 3 only reaches $30 million, it should still be enough to end the Marvel juggernaut's three-week reign in the United States and Canada: Endgame, which has grossed a record $2.5 billion worldwide, is expected to add another $27 million domestically this weekend.
John Wick: Chapter 3 also appears poised for a franchise-high domestic opening, surpassing the $14.4 million earned in 2014 by John Wick, and the $30.4 million debut in 2017 by John Wick: Chapter 2.
Directed by Chad Stahelski, John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum stars Keanu Reeves, Ian McShane, Laurence Fishburne, Halle Berry, Jason Mantzoukas, Lance Reddick and Anjelica Huston. The film opens Friday nationwide.
