John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum director Chad Stahelski doesn't think that the title assassin is going to get a happy ending.
“John may survive all this shit, but at the end of it, there’s no happy ending. He’s got nowhere to go,” Stahelski told IndieWire. “Honestly, I challenge you right now, here’s a question to you: How do you fucking want me to end it? Do you think he’s going to ride off into the fucking sunset? He’s killed 300 fucking people and he’s just going to [walk away], everything’s okay? He’s just going to fall in love with a love interest? If you’re this fucking guy, if this guy really exist[ed], how is this guy’s day going to end? He’s fucked for the rest of his life. It’s just a matter of time.”
Although Stahelski's comments make it clear Wick will probably have to die at some point, he doesn't yet have definite plans to kill the character off. “Keanu and I both like the ending [to John Wick: Chapter 3],” Stahelski said. “He’s like, ‘Yes, you can kill him off, but maybe that’s not an option right now, because we like the universe.'”
At this time, there's no clear indication when the series will end. Both Stahelski and series star Keanu Reeves have indicated they'd like to keep making films in the franchise, provided fans keep showing up to see them.
The upcoming sequel looks to pick up immediately after the conclusion of its predecessor with John still on the run from the world's top assassins after a multi-million dollar bounty has been placed on his head for breaking one of the Continental's most sacred rules. With the contract killer attempting to desperately escape from New York City in one piece, hopefully John can move as quickly as Reeves' recap.
Directed by Chad Stahelski, John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum stars Keanu Reeves, Ian McShane, Laurence Fishburne, Halle Berry, Jason Mantzoukas, Lance Reddick and Anjelica Huston. It opens on May 17 in theaters everywhere.
