In a new series by photographer Sandro Miller, Academy Award nominated actor John Malkovich looks absolutely perfect as the Joker.

Malkovich has played a number of colorful characters over the course of his storied career, ranging from cartoonish villains to a somber, surreal version of himself. Now, as part of a huge photo series from photographer Sandro Miller, he's taken on the forms of some of the most famous characters in pop culture.

As a part of Sandro Miller's photo shoot, Malkovich was dressed up as a number of different major film characters and figures from history like Winston Churchill, Albert Einstein and Madonna. Other pictures were riffs on iconic villains like the twins from The Shining. One of the most famous characters he portrayed in the the shoot turned out to be the Joker.

As the above picture shows, Malkovich is specifically inspired by the Jack Nicholson version of the character from director Tim Burton's Batman, which was originally released in 1989. The actor is clearly having a blast as the character, and the gallery features four pictures of the actor as the Joker.

While he's never played Batman's most famous foe, Malkovich has appeared in a few comic book movies. He stepped into the DC Universe as the villain Quentin Turnbull in 2010's Jonah Hex, and he portrayed Marvin Boggs in 2010's RED and 2013's RED 2. He was also the front-runner for the role of the Vulture in director Sam Raimi's scrapped Spider-Man 4.

Directed and co-written by Todd Phillips, Joker stars Joaquin Phoenix as the titular character along with Robert De Niro, Marc Maron, Zazie Beetz, Frances Conroy, Brett Cullen and Bill Camp. It is scheduled to be released on October 4, 2019.
