WWE legend John Cena is officially throwing his hat into the ring to play Captain America, if Chris Evans bows out of the Marvel Cinematic Universe next year with Avengers 4.
Debuting in the role in 2011's Captain America: The First Avenger, Evans has become synonymous with the star-spangled superhero. The actor has signaled his departure from the MCU, although Avengers 4 co-director Joe Russo recently insisted, somewhat cryptically, that "he's not done yet."
Still, there's been a lot of speculation about who might pick up the vibranium shield, with Cena now addressing rumors about whether he could be that man.
Appearing on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, the wrestler turned actor said, "If it's out there, if the Captain America people are listening and you're watching right now, I'd totally do it." Brushing off his tongue-in-cheek response, Cena then seriously told DeGeneres, "I totally will, because I think I'd be a good Captain America ... and I've already ruined everyone's childhood, so it can't get any worse!"
As it stands, Sebastian Stan's Bucky Barnes and Anthony Mackie's Sam Wilson are the most likely candidates to take over where Evans left off, but starting fresh, with Cena playing someone new, would be an interesting route to take the mantle of Captain America. MCU veteran Frank Grillo has said he thinks the next actor could be African-American or even a woman.
Cena has already tried his hand at acting, and after appearing in the likes of 12 Rounds and Daddy's Home, he's set to star star this month in Bumblebee.
Apart from Cena's cryptic post on Instagram of a scratched vibranium shield, there are only rumors that he's even joining the MCU, let alone playing Captain America. Spoilers are on lockdown for Avengers 4, meaning only a handful of people actually know whether Evans is bowing out with the end of Phase Three.
The untitled sequel to Avengers: Infinity War will release on May 3, 2019. Directed by Joe and Anthony Russo, it stars Robert Downey Jr., Josh Brolin, Mark Ruffalo, Tom Hiddleston, Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Jeremy Renner, Chris Pratt, Elizabeth Olsen, Sebastian Stan, Benedict Cumberbatch, Paul Bettany, Samuel L. Jackson, Cobie Smulders, Benedict Wong, Zoe Saldana, Karen Gillan, Vin Diesel, Dave Bautista, Pom Klementieff, Scarlett Johansson, Tom Holland, and Anthony Mackie.
