Arriving later this year, Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles seeks to turn the beloved 34-year-old franchise on its head, changing much of long-accepted lore. Most notably, the four crime-fighting brothers are each a different kind of turtle, wielding a vastly different weapon from what fans are accustomed to: The cool but crude Raphael is now team leader, the position previously held by Leonardo. Not only that, he's a snapping turtle who’s ditched his iconic sais for twin tonfas. Leonardo, now a red-eared slider full of charm and “rebel heart,” will wield an ōdachi sword; Donatello is a soft-shell turtle with a tech bo staff and master coder; and Michelangelo is a box turtle with the personality of an artist, who rocks a kusari-fundo.

The new series also introduces an African-American April O'Neil, and bestows the Ninja Turtles with magical powers that they will use to defend New York, and the mystical city that lies beneath. It remains to be seen whether the changes to TMNT canon will also envelope the heroes' choice of pizza, as PETA hopes.

Premiering later this year on Nickelodeon, Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles stars Omar Miller as Raphael, Ben Schwartz as Leonardo, Josh Brener as Donatello, Brandon Mychal Smith as Michelangelo, Kat Graham as April O’Neil, Eric Bauza as Master Splinter, and John Cena as Baron Draxum.
