John Byrne’s X-Men Gets the Artifact Edition Treatment at IDW

The X-Men stories by Chris Claremont, John Byrne and Terry Austin stand as “the” definitive run on the series for many fans, producing influential stories like “The Dark Phoenix Saga” and “Days of Future Past,” and bringing the Marvel mutants to a newfound prominence. In July, IDW Publishing will celebrate Byrne’s artwork on the series with an upcoming “Artifact Edition” volume, and CBR has the first details.

The John Byrne’s X-Men Artifact Edition, in the tradition of the company’s award-winning Artifact Editions and Artist’s Editions, will feature more than 100 pages of “covers, splashes and pages” from across Byrne’s run on X-Men, scanned from the original black-and-white art and published in a 12-inch by 17-inch format to mimic the dimensions of actual art boards.

“Even after all these years, it’s the X-Men work I did with Chris and Terry that still resonates the most with fans,” Byrne said in a statement to CBR. “Hopefully when you all see the pages in this format you’ll still feel the same way!”

John Byrne’s X-Men Artifact Edition will be a 144-page hardcover, with a suggested retail price of $125. It’s set to appear in IDW’s May 2018 solicitations; advance solicited for release in July.

Solicitation details follow below. Check back with CBR latest this week for IDW Publishing’s full May 2018 solicitations.

John Byrne’s X-Men Artifact Edition

  • Chris Claremont (w) • John Byrne (a & c) • Terry Austin, Various (inks)
  • John Byrne’s run on the X-Men began with issue #108 and lasted until #143. The team of Claremont, Byrne, and Austin made the X-Men (which was already a hit series under Dave Cockrum) soar to the top of the charts in comics sales. They introduced Alpha Flight, and then created the near mythical storylines “The Dark Phoenix Saga” and “Days of Future Past.” These and the rest of their stories remain burned into the memories of collective fandom to this day, and have been the basis for several X-Men films.
  • This Artifact Edition will include more than 100 pages of X-Men covers, splashes, and pages from Byrne’s X-Men run. All have been meticulously scanned from the original art and reproduced to the exacting Artist’s Edition standards that have won IDW Publishing five highly coveted Eisner Awards (to date)!
