The giant mecha, or Jaeger, was piloted in Guillermo del Toro's 2013 original by first brothers Raleigh and Yancy Becket, played by Charlie Hunnam and Diego Klattenhoff, and then Raleigh and Mako Mori (Rinko Kikuchi). Seemingly destroyed at the end of the first film, Gipsy Danger is the first Jaeger to be confirmed for the planned 2018 sequel.

Set in a future where enormous monsters have emerged from an interdimensional portal on the floor of the Pacific Ocean, "Pacific Rim" is set in the later days of humanity's war against the Kaiju using the giant mechas piloted by two pilots whose minds are joined by a neural bridge.

The sequel, originally called "Pacific Rim: Maelstrom," is believed to be set years after the events of the 2013, with Boyega cast as Jaeger pilot Jake Pentecost, the son of Idris Elba's character Stacker Pentecost. The "Star Wars" veteran is joined by Scott Eastwood, Cailee Spaeny, Jing Tian, Wesley Wong, Zhang Jin, Lily Ji, Chen Zitong, Lan Yingying and Qian Yong Chen.

Directed by Steven S. DeKnight ("Spartacus," "Daredevil"), "Pacific Rim: Uprising" opens Feb. 23, 2018.
