John Barrowman Joins Cast of The CW's "Arrow"

"Torchwood" star John Barrowman has joined the cast of The CW's "Arrow" in a mysterious recurring role, Entertainment Weekly reports.

Based on DC Comics' Green Arrow, the upcoming superhero drama centers on Oliver Queen, a wealthy young bad boy who, after spending five years shipwrecked on an island, returns to Starling City with a mastery of the bow and a determination to make a difference.

According to EW, producers will only say that Barrowman will play a "well-dressed man" who is "as mysterious as he is wealthy ... he is an acquaintance of the Queen family and a prominent figure in Starling City." The website floats the possibility of the DC character Stanley Dover Sr., the philanthropist better known as the Star City Slayer. But really, he could be portraying any number of figures with ties to Green Arrow continuity (or an entirely new character).

Barrowman, best known for his role as Captain Jack Harkness on "Doctor Who" and "Torchwood," appeared in five episodes of "Desperate Housewives" and voiced the cosmic entity the Stranger on Marvel's "Super Hero Squad."

Developed by "Green Lantern" screenwriters Marc Guggenheim and Greg Berlanti and "Fringe" co-executive producer Andrew Kreisberg, "Arrow" stars Stephen Amell ("Hung") Oliver Queen, Colin Donnell as Tommy Merlyn, Katie Cassidy ("Supernatural," "Melrose Place") as Laurel Lance, David Ramsey ("Dexter") as John Diggle, Willa Holland ("The O.C.") as Thea Queen, Susanna Thompson ("Star Trek: Deep Space Nine") as Moira Queen and Paul Blackthorne ("24") as Detective Quentin Lance.

"Arrow" premieres Wednesday, Oct. 10 at 8 p.m. ET/PT on The CW.
