While names like Robert Pattinson have been rumored around as potential candidates to play Batman in Matt Reeves' upcoming movie, The Batman, Joey Lawrence has nominated himself as the next potential cinematic Dark Knight.
The actor, who's most famous for playing Joey Russo in '90s sitcom Blossom, has thrown his name in the ring as a potential contender for Batman's cape and cowl, and he even recruited his fans into the campaign to help him win the job.
Lawrence made it abundantly clear on his Instagram account that he wanted to play Batman. He has a number of posts about Ben Affleck leaving the role and has told his "angels" that it is a part he has dreamed of playing "as far back as my memory goes."
After Affleck left the DC Extended Universe, he explained that he left because he couldn't "crack it," meaning that he couldn't figure out a new story or angle for his version of the Dark Knight.
In response to Affleck's statement, Lawrence asserted that Batman is something that he "can crack."
Joey Lawrence's fans then got involved, throwing their weight behind their favorite actor to win his dream role.
One of his fans even started a petition at change.org, titled "Cast Joey Lawrence as the next Batman" and Lawrence took to Instagram, where he threw his support behind the petition and encouraged his fans to sign it.
The petition reads:
"Joey Lawrence is not only an extremely talented actor and has a wider acting range than most people are aware of, but the guy is a beast. He is laser focused and super committed. If he gets this part I can guarantee you won't be disappointed. The other great thing about Joey Lawrence that people may not realize is that he is in better physical shape (and more agile) than guys 15 years younger than him. So their excuse of wanting to go with a younger actor is stupid. Joey is more than capable. He could crush the competition. Joey Lawrence will make an amazing Batman!!"
As of this writing, the petition has 711 signatures. While it may be hard to see the actor who gained fame for saying "whoa" as Batman, his Instagram page does show that he has maintained an impressive physique.
However, that still may not be enough to get Lawrence the role. Director Matt Reeves is reportedly looking for someone younger to take on the role of Bruce Wayne in The Batman, which will supposedly take place in the middle of Batman's superhero career and highlight the hero's role as the World's Greatest Detective.
Matt Reeves' The Batman is set to open in theaters on June 25, 2021.
