The Flash will return in 2018 with Barry on trial for murder, but it seems that he’s not the only one who’s ethics will be strained. In a new teaser for the midseason premiere, Joe West is revealed to be willing to plant fake evidence in order to exonerate his adopted son.
The only other person who witnesses this is Ralph Dibny, the Elongated Man, who questions Joe’s actions. Joe responds with, “It’s the right thing to do, Ralph. Just open the door and I’ll do the rest.”
It’s unclear what evidence Joe is planting or how it will affect his career as a detective, but there’s no doubt he’ll suffer some ramifications along the way. Considering that he’s been a good cop for so long, tarnishing his reputation and credibility in order to save someone from prison goes against the law and what he vowed to uphold. If Captain Singh were to find out, he’d surely lose his job.
During The Flash’s midseason finale, Barry Allen was tricked by the Thinker and came home to the dead body of Clifford DeVoe. Before the fastest man alive could respond, the police appeared and arrested him without a second thought. It’s clear that Joe is fearing Barry will be wrongfully put in prison just like his father, and it makes sense that he’d go to extreme measures in order to save him — but planting evidence? Say it ain’t so, Joe…
Starring Grant Gustin as the Scarlet Speedster, The Flash returns Tuesday, January 16 at 8 p.m. ET/PT.
