Joe Kosinski's Horizons Nabs Jessica Chastain As Female Lead

TRON Legacy director Joseph Kosinski is following up last year's 3D blockbuster with another sci-fi pitch, only this one's based on an entirely new premise. It remains to be seen how original it is. Tom Cruise has been attached to star in the movie, Horizons (formerly Oblivion) for some time now, and Variety brings word today that another name has signed on as well.

Jessica Chastain will take one of the film's two lead female roles, although it's not clear at this time which one it will be. The story follows Cruise's future-Earth soldier, stationed on the planet's surface in the aftermath of an apocalyptic alien invasion. He comes across a crashed escape pod of some kind and meets a woman there, with the encounter setting off "a chain of events that cause him to question everything he knows." Chastain could either be playing that woman or the wife of Cruise's character.

The script comes from William Monahan and Karl Gajdusek, who adapted it from a graphic novel written by Kosinski. Horizons is set to arrive on July 19, 2013.
