Jodie -- MTV Studios' upcoming spinoff of Daria -- has found its home channel. The new animated series will not air on MTV itself, but on fellow Viacom-owned network Comedy Central.
Per The Hollywood Reporter, Jodie has officially landed at Comedy Central, though currently does not have a premiere date, nor has an episode count for the first season been revealed. Created and written by Grace Edwards, Comedy Central's Jodie is a spinoff of Glenn Eichler and Susie Lewis Lynn's 1997 MTV series Daria, which was itself a spinoff of Mike Judge's 1993 MTV series Beavis and Butt-Head.
Jodie stars Tracee Ellis Ross as Jodie Landon (originally voiced by Jessica Cydnee Jackson), a close friend of Daria Morgendorffer from their time at Lawndale High. As The Hollywood Reporter explains, the spinoff seeks to "explore the trials and tribulations of a first job for a new generation." Not unlike how Daria offered commentary on the late 1990s and early 2000s, Jodie "will satirize workplace culture, Gen Z struggles, the artifice of social media while also featuring themes of empowerment along gender and racial lines, explorations of privilege and a personal and professional issues young Black women face today."
The new series was originally announced in 2018 as Daria & Jodie, though the decision was made to put the focus on Jodie when Ross joined the project in mid-2019. MTV's current hope is that Jodie will serve as the first series in a larger "Daria Universe."
