Joaquin Phoenix Up For Role In Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter

Joaquin Phoenix is the front-runner to star opposite Ben Walker in director Timur Bekmambetov's adaptation of Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, Deadline reports.

Based on Seth Grahame-Smith's bestselling 2010 novel, the movie chronicles the secret life of the ax-wielding 16 president, who we're told waged a clandestine lifelong war against the bloodsuckers after one of them killed his mother. The mashup, which features among its cast Edgar Allan Poe, William Seward and an undead John Wilkes Booth, imagines a Confederacy supported by vampires, who rely on the slave trade for food.

Phoenix would play Henry Sturgis, a vampire who saves the life of the 16-year-old Lincoln, educates him about vampirism, then repeatedly points him in the direction of evil bloodsuckers.

Produced by Bekmambetov, Tim Burton and Jim Lemley, the $69-million 20th Century Fox film is marked for release on June 22, 2012.
