Director Todd Phillips released the first image of Joaquin Phoenix in the Joker origin movie on Sunday, and, it didn't take long for a fan to imagine what the three-time Oscar nominee might look like with the comic book villain's signature white makeup and green hair.

Reddit user cameron_w_robertson shared the image of the actor, presumably following the dip in a vat of chemicals. "What our joker could look like using Todd Phillips' newly released photo," he wrote, "Can't wait!"

Anticipation appears to be building for Phillips'  film, which also stars Marc Maron, Robert De Niro and Zasie Beetz, all added to the cast over the past few weeks.

Set in the 1980s, Joker has been characterized as a crime film that takes its cues from Taxi Driver and Raging Bull, with Phoenix playing Arthur Fleck, an original alter ego for DC's Clown Prince of Crime. It's expected to be the first release under a new banner for DC films separate from the continuity of such so-called DC Extended Universe features as Justice League and Wonder Woman.

Principal photography is under way in New York City, ahead of its planned release on Oct. 4, 2019.
