The Batman: Arkham series is a popular set of games that started with Arkham Asylum in 2009. The series seemingly concluded with Arkham Knight in 2015. The four games in the series were all praised to varying degrees, and rumors have abounded about future installments in the series since Arkham Knight released.

Phoenix's Joker movie isn't associated with the DC Extended Universe and centers on Arthur Fleck, a failed comedian who turns to a life of crime. Phoenix has said that he was drawn to the film because the approach to the character was unique. Last year, Phoenix stated, "It feels unique, and I think more than anything, and probably the most important thing, is Todd seems very passionate about it and very giving, and so that’s exciting."
