Many fans were surprised to see J.K. Simmons reprise his role as J. Jonah Jameson from Sam Raimi's Spider-Man trilogy and the Ultimate Spider-Man animated series in the mid-credits scene of 2019's Spider-Man: Far From Home. However, several moviegoers may have observed that Jonah was bald when he appeared onscreen. According to Simmons, the reason for this change was to revise the Marvel Cinematic Universe version of the character from both the comics and the Raimi films.

Simmons gave the full story behind the choice to lose Jonah's hair, bringing up the creative differences he had with the movie's production team regarding the modernization of Jonah.

"The only thing we didn't a hundred percent see eye to eye on, I think, was how much [different] is this character going to be the character from, I think, the comic books and from the Sam Raimi original trilogy, and how much do we want to evolve it and to have it be more contemporary or more… you know," Simmons explained to Collider. "I was very attached to what I had done previously for a variety of reasons. So I guess the compromise ended up being no hair. Which I think honestly, that decision might've just been them going, 'We don't have time to make a wig. We got to shoot him tomorrow in the office.' So, J. Jonah Jameson either lost his hair in the last few years, or he was wearing a hairpiece the whole time. I don't know, you pick."

Simmons is currently signed on to resume the role for several more MCU appearances, and has already filmed his next appearance as the character in an unnamed Marvel film.

Starring Tom Holland and Zendaya, the third MCU Spider-Man film is set for release on Nov. 5, 2021. An official title for Spider-Man 3 has not yet been announced.
