Harry Potter creator J.K. Rowling recently came under fire for several controversial comments she made regarding the trans community. Yet, it is not her series that is trending on Twitter.

Several Twitter users recommended K.A. Applegate's Animorphs book series as an alternative to the Harry Potter series. "Throw out your wizard books and buy Animorphs, the series with an afterword where the author goes 'oh are you sad that this war story didn't end happily? good, you should be, no war ends happily because all war is bad,'" one Twitter user wrote.

Created by K.A. Applegate (the pen name of Katherine Applegate and her husband Michael Grant), Animorphs focuses on a group of teenagers who are granted the ability to morph into any animal by the alien prince Elfangor. They use these abilities to battle the invading race of Yeerks, slug-like aliens who crawl into their victim's head and control their actions. The book series tackled several heavy subjects, including the horrors of war and the trials of growing up.

Animorphs lasted from 1996 to 2001, with a total of 54 books. A live-action television series was created for Nickelodeon and a graphic novel adaptation of the first book will be released this October.
