Josh Brolin's Thanos played a major role in Marvel's immensely successful Avengers: Infinity War and will be important in the upcoming Avengers 4. However, Thanos creator Jim Starlin has now revealed that Brolin wasn't who he expected to see in the role, though that doesn't mean he didn't love the actor's performance.
"Brolin was never on my list of potential Thanoses, because I always thought it was just going to be a voiceover job," Starlin told Chuck Load of Comics at Ace Comic Con in Chicago. "You know, [An] animated character. That is how they were doing it at that point. And the new technology was only being introduced just about the time they first introduced him in the Avengers. I was thinking somebody like Arnold Schwarzenegger, Idris Elba, anybody with a deep voice. That was the only thing I had on the agenda as far as I was thinking who to have."
Stalin went on to offer praise for Brolin's performance, saying, "Now that Brolin has been on the screen and I’ve watched him move, I can’t imagine anybody else playing that character... my hearing of [Thanos' voice] is a lot less gravely than I had expected it in the past to be."
This isn't the first time Starlin has praised Brolin's take on the character. In April, Starlin praised the actor's performance, calling him an "incredible Thanos."
The sequel to Avengers: Infinity War will release on May 3, 2019.
