DC Comics co-publisher and legendary artist Jim Lee has revealed his pencils for the cover from the second issue of the incoming DC event, Dark Nights: Metal. Not only does it depict the entire Justice League in action, apparently chasing down Batman -- it also brings another piece of Bat-lore to the currently Rebirth-ing DC Universe.
"'Kiss that baby goodbye!'" Lee tweeted. "Pencils for Batman: Metal cover #2! Oddly enough, not my first cover with a hero & a jet ski ?"
Lee is referring to the cover he and inker Klaus Janson illustrated for 1990's Punisher War Journal #19. Not only did that cover feature a heavily armed Frank Castle cruising around on a Jet Ski, the cover text specifically called out the incongruent humor in the image.
Written by Scott Snyder and illustrated by Greg Capullo, Dark Nights: Metal is described as the former Batman team’s “rock ‘n’ roll epic.” According to DC Co-Publisher Dan DiDio, the entire DC Universe is at risk in the event. “Not even just our world,” he said, “but multiple worlds at risk.”
Snyder said in a statement, teasing the event, “I’ve been planning METAL for as long as I’ve been writing Batman, but I want METAL to be built upon the stories happening now in Rebirth. Most of all we want to create new material that feels really modern and different. And above all, it’s going to be fun. Even with terror and nightmares, it won’t be grim. DARK NIGHTS: METAL will be celebratory, huge and crazy.”
Dark Nights: Metal #2 arrives in stores in September 2017 with a cover price of $3.99.
