Jim Hanley's Universe Celebrates "DMZ" Vol 2 With Brian Wood Appearance

Official Press Release

New York, NY - On Wednesday, February 7th, JIM HANLEY'S UNIVERSE celebrates the release of the second volume of DC/Vertigo's best selling comic book, DMZ. The collection, titled "Body of a Journalist," will be available for purchase, but even more exciting is that co-creator and writer, Brian Wood, will be appearing at the store's Manhattan location from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM. And he wont be alone.

Brian Wood is a multiple Eisner Award winning comics writer, illustrator and designer, best known for his 12 issue comics series, DEMO (AiT/Planet Lar). He's since been on a creative hot streak, having written LOCAL (Oni Press) with artist Ryan Kelly; THE TOURISTS (Image Comics, with artist Toby Cypress) and most prominently, DMZ (Vertigo Comics) with artist Riccardo Buchielli. DMZ is the story of Matty Roth, an embedded war journalist trapped in a most unlikely war zone: the streets of New York City. Recently, Wood was profiled in the New York Times, where they said, "[Mr. Wood] doesn't always take a ripped-from-the-headlines approach, and the series is at its best in the smaller moments showing how life is different in the war-torn city." Slate.com said, "Brian Wood's DMZ - one of the two best new comics about Iraq - offers a potent portrait of a city torn by civil war. But the city isn't Baghdad; it's New York, sometime in the near future." The Chicago Sun-Times said, "DMZ is incredible. It is addictive and brutal, and a perfect antidote to the flag-waving Fox News broadcasts of the War on Terror. [Brian] Wood and [Riccardo] Burchielli have created something special." "Body of a Journalist," which collects the second story arc of DMZ, issues #6-12, sees [Matty]Roth's star power land him the break of a lifetime: an interview with the infamous leaders of the Free Armies.

Joining Wood will be artists, Becky Cloonan and Cliff Chiang. Becky Cloonan collaborated with Brian on the aforementioned DEMO, but has distinguished herself as a writer/artist with her "punk rock pirate" adventure graphic novel, EAST COAST RISING (TokyoPop). She is currently illustrating DC/Vertigo's AMERICAN VIRGIN. Chiang, a former editor, has since moved on to illustrating, having drawn such titles as BEWARE THE CREEPER and INFINITE CRISIS: THE SPECTRE (DC Comics). He is currently collaborating with writer Brian Azzarello (100 BULLETS) on DC's TALES OF THE UNEXPECTED.

All three creators will be appearing on Wednesday, February 7th from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm. Customers are asked to line up early as we are expecting this to be a major event.
