The following article contains spoilers from DC vs. Vampires: Killers #1, on sale now.

Now that most of the heroes dead, it falls to the survivors of Nightwing's new world order to pick up the pieces and find a way to save the world. DC vs. Vampires: Killers #1 (by Matthew Rosenberg, Mike Bowden, Eduardo Mello, Lebeau Underwood, John Livesay, Antonio Fabela, Troy Peteri) revealed that the one survivor who did the most to ensure that hope did not die out is also the one who has gone unnoticed. Jim Gordon risked his life to get Lex Luthor's blood to Harley Quinn, making him the true hero of this story.

Jim is not like the other heroes. He doesn't have powers or any kind of advanced training beyond his years in law enforcement. Yet he risked his life to travel across a vampire dystopia to get perhaps humanity's last hope to someone who could finish the journey. Jim's was a tale of survival, tenacity, and in the end, sacrifice. He deserves to be recognized for this.

Jim Gordon Has Humanity's Last Hope

By this stage of the vampire's rule, Jim was probably all alone in the world. The members of the Justice League were dead or turned into vampires. The other remaining heroes were likely dead, proper military and law enforcement would have been the next target on Nightwing's list. So, the GCPD and all its resources likely would have been destroyed in the opening days of the war. This meant that Jim had to travel through Gotham, the capital of the vampire kingdom, all by himself.

He would have had to court death, both by evading the vampires and placing his trust in the survivors, some of whom would likely have been less than hospitable to him. He couldn't even rely on his greatest ally, Batman, to come and help him this time. It would have been a journey he likely knew wouldn't end well for him. Yet, he continued anyway, pushing past any fears or grief. In this world, communication and transportation have largely been cut off. Jim had no way of knowing what became of his daughter. For all he knew, she could be dead or turned, but he chose to press on anyway.

Jim Gordon Just Saved the World

He embodied the ideal of service for the sake of others. If Jim couldn't have any hope for himself, then he would spend his last days fighting to make sure there was hope for others. Right up until the last moment. As he was taken away by the vampires that finally caught up to him, Jim managed to slip the vial of Lex Luthor's blood to Harley Quinn. This gave humanity one last chance, and misdirecting his pursuers, one of whom was Mister Terrific, one of the smartest men in the DC Universe.

In all likelihood, if he wasn't immediately executed or turned, Jim would have been tortured for the whereabouts of the blood. But, the fact that it took Catwoman telling Mister Terrific that Harley had the vial indicated that if so, then he did not break. He held true to his hope and sacrificed his life to make sure there was a chance to see the sun again. In summary, he deserves to more than to be misnamed by Harley, and then completely forgotten.
