The first trailer to Jeff Fowler's Sonic the Hedgehog received intense backlash over the physical appearance of SEGA's beloved blue mascot. Despite having to add more time to its post-production cycle, it appears as though listening to the fan feedback has helped the movie connect with fans. According to Jim Carrey, who stars in the film as Dr. Ivo Robotnik, the negative reception "turned out to be a great thing" for the movie.

"It turned out to be a co-op where everybody was in on the creation," Carrey said. "I think everybody felt good about it ultimately because [director] Jeff Fowler [had] no ego involved at all. He just went, 'These people grew up with it, and it's important to them that we get it right.' And I think it was just a much better movie because of it."

Carrey noted how he doesn't create his characters "based on what people are saying," but admitted that there were parts of the movie that perhaps weren't clicking correctly until after the team returned to the drawing board to address the fan reception. Although he had his own concerns, he stressed that, ultimately, the movie "turned out fantastic."

Jeff Fowler's Sonic the Hedgehog stars Ben Schwartz as Sonic and Jim Carrey as Dr. Robotnik, with James Marsden, Neal McDonald, Tika Sumpter, Adam Pally and Natasha Rothwell. The film is now in theaters.
