Jim Carrey had strong words regarding the incident between Will Smith and Chris Rock at the 94th Academy Awards ceremony."I was sickened," Carrey told CBS' Gayle King. "I was sickened by the standing ovation. Hollywood is just spineless en masse and it really felt like this is a really clear indication that we arenât the cool club anymore." The ovation Carrey is referring to is the one Smith received about an hour after slapping Rock, when it was announced that he'd won an Oscar for Best Actor for his role as Richard Williams in King Richard.
"Iâd have announced this morning that I was suing Will for $200 million because that video is going to be there forever, itâs going to be ubiquitous," Carrey added. "That insult is gonna last a very long time. If you want to yell from the audience and show disapproval or say something on Twitter [thatâs fine]. But you do not have the right to walk up on stage and smack somebody in the face because they said words. [The slap] came out of nowhere because Will has something going on inside him thatâs frustrated. I wish him the best. I have nothing against Will Smith. Heâs done great things, but that was not a good moment. It cast a shadow over everyoneâs shining moment last nightâ¦It was a selfish moment."
During the Oscars ceremony, Rock -- a presenter -- made a joke about Jada Pinkett Smith's shaved head. Pinkett Smith has been open about her struggles with alopecia in the past, and Smith took issue with the comedian's remarks, stormed the stage and slapped him in the face. "Keep my wife's name out your fucking mouth!" the actor shouted twice.
Smith issued an apology to Rock the following day. "My behavior at last night's Academy Awards was unacceptable and inexcusable," he wrote, noting that "jokes at [his] expense are part of the job, but a joke about [Jada Pinkett Smith's] medical condition was too much for me to bear and I reacted emotionally. I was out of line and I was wrong. I am embarrassed and my actions were not indicative of the man I want to be."
Prior to Smith's apology, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences launched a formal review into the incident.
